What is the performance decrease (cost) of running Windows in the virtual environment of VmWare?

I’m considering making a VmWare virtual environment running on top of windows XP (henceforth Base installation).

The environment would run Windows Ma?tre d’h?tel and would be used for development as it can be really heavy to run on my mainframe all the time.

Processes like SQL ma?tre d’h?tel + many more coming from the development environment is killing my windows installation, and I reckon startup and general performance would benefit from decoupling my development environment.

Also I would make another environment for testing programs without ruining my base installation.

My base installation would feature Outlook, Instant messenger, Nokia PC suite, Office, burning software, zip program, ISO editor, Photo control software, Web page creation tool & media players.
Specs: 2gb ram, Core 2 Duo 1.66Ghz T5500, 80gb 5400rpm Hd
I have no use for graphics in my virtual environments – really this machine does not run any kind of 3d graphics.

i reckon it should work fine , the only business is if you increase your ram then there will be more ram for host machine and virtual machine
i dont reckon you will encounter any additional conundrum as you are not using a graphic oriented application ,its just the graphic which still have not been fully utilized in vmware and additional virtual pc softwares like virtual box etc
