How to turn a samsung lcd monitor into HDTV?
I’m interested in getting a Samsung 23” monitor for my dorm room next year. I’m new to the monitor world, but I want to know more. It doesn’t come with a dual link DVI cable. Can someone tell me if I can turn this into a functioning TV?
If it doesn’t come with a tv tuner/controller card, what would anyone suggest be a excellent company to buy a tv tuner from?

Most likely, it sounds like it may maybe. Now computers have DVI and HDTV has HDMI. Honestly, pretty much the same business. I am doubting your college offers HDTV service, but as long as your monitor has a tv controller card in it or you have a cable box to hook into it…you would be fine. A monitor is what it says…A MONITOR. To use as a tv, you need a box to translate the tv signal to the monitor. and if this box has an HDMI input, then you may maybe.
Excellent luck

LCD monitors use Liquid Crystal Diodes.
TFT is an LCD monitor that uses Thin Film Transistor technology.
Additional types are:
TN+Film – Twisted Nematic
IPS – In Plane Switching
MVA – Multi-Domain Vertical Alignment
PVA – Patterned Vertical Alignment
S-PVA – Super Patterned Vertical Alignment.
TFT is the most common today, and LCD is accepted as life TFT-LCD. Usually you only see a differentiation if it’s one of the additional technologies. The additional types all have their advantages and disadvantages, but TFT is the cheapest to manufacture today.
For your eyes, you want an LCD. LCD’s are on, and exchange when they exchange vs. a CRT which has a refresh rate. In a CRT, the phosphorus is charged and glows, but then dims very quickly. The refresh recharges it, but there is a dimming and brightening exchange. The higher the refresh rate, the less noticable it is to you.
Within an LCD, if cost is no object, you want an IPS (better) or S-PVA (best). They will have the highest contrast ratios and brightest screens. Be prepared to pay, and pay well for this luxury though.

This is a bit like a “what’s the difference between a dog and an animal?” question. LCD earnings Liquid Crystal Show, while TFT stands for the Thin Film Transistors that are used to drive the LCD pixels. TFT’s are ALWAYS used for this purpose, but some brands like to mention it as if it’s something extra. There’s no difference.
LCD (as well as TFT) screens are far less a burden to the eyes as CRT screens are. because the liquid crystals are stable between refreshes, while CRT pixels are not. Therefore an LCD screen with a refresh rate of 60 Hz can yet be less tiring than a CRT screen with a refresh rate of 85 Hz. As long as the lightning of the room is comparable with the light from the screen and you look away from the screen every now and then your eyes should be fine.
