why is my whirlpool refrigerator making a loud noise whenever the compressor shuts off.?
Its 2 being ancient and Im the 2nd title-holder. It uses R 134A with a capillary tube system, and I can feel the compressor shake pretty violently when the thermostat is satisfied. I thought that the compressor mounts were loose so I tightened them and still the noise continues. Should I be worried about liquid slugging?

You need to untighten the compressor bolts, it is supposed to be somewhat loose. It should have rubber feet or spacers to absorb the atmosphere that occur during operation. A lot of time a fridge will make noise when it stops running, this can be caused by the freon pressure rebalancing. Not much you can do about that. You may also have a pinched line or a line that is resting against something. Make sure all coils are clean.

Do not loosen the compressor mounting bolts. You really shouldn’t have been able to tighten them anymore than what they were when shipped from the factory. They will only tighten so far because they are only partially threaded.
What is doubtless happening is caused by a broken mounting spring inside the hermetically sealed compressor housing upon which the electric motor sits. If one is broke the motor will bang against the sides of the housing when it shuts off. Nothing you can doe about but since it is only two being ancient the compressor should carry a five year warranty so have a tech come out and verify the conundrum and if it is what I suggest it shouldn’t cost you nothing to replace (read the warranty as you may have to pay the labor).

The fridge side of my refrigerator is about 55 degrees. The freezer seems to be fine. I am trying to choose if I should just replace it or call someone out to look at it.

I don’t reckon it will be worth the price of the service call. If you can afford a new refrigerator, I would check them out. They are so much more energy efficient now and also better at keeping foods chilled at optimal temperatures.

If it’s not broken then don’t fix it. The normal temperature for a fridge is around 35 degrees.

whirlpool is a excellent fridge and 12 being ancient isn,t that ancient, it,s worth fixing
Answer by Charlie F
Check with Sears repair center. They came out and checken my 9yo refrigerator and told me it wasn’t worth fixing. The service call cost $ 75 and they gave me a $ 75 coupon towards a new refrigerator.

Don’t replace your fridge yet in anticipation of you check out a couple of things.
Most 2 door fridges work by the cold air getting blown into fridge section by a fan in the freezer. The cold air enters the fridge section through vents in the wall that separates the fridge and freezer.
Have a excellent listen to see if you can hear the fan working. Because if it’s not working cold air will not get into your fridge. Your freezer will remain frozen but the fridge will not be working so excellent.
If the fan is not working and you are the handy type of person it’s not hard to replace. You have to turn the powder off to the fridge and remove the contents. Unscrew the rear take in panel. Now its going to be hard at first the remove the rear take in panel because ice build makes it stick, so go and get a hair dryer to melt some of the ice build behind the panel.
When the panel is removed first have a look to see if the vents are not blocked with ice preventing cold air getting into the fridge. If the vent is blocked with ice use your hair dryer to melt the ice.
If it turns out it is the fan not working is not hard to remove. Unscrew the fan from the mounting bracket and unplug it. While the fan is out use a multi-meter to double check if its a faulty fan. Because if the fan is not faulty and the the vents are not blocked them it’s most liable to be the timer or the thermostat is faulty.
The timer and thermostat is in the top section of the fridge and again you can use your multi-meter to check if they are working.

Less vital appliances maximize utility while freeing up counter and storage space
Builders are costructing less vital homes. As the American home gets less vital, it makes sense that a less vital kitchen is going to need less vital appliances. Some manufacturers have long recognized the need for less vital appliances with young millennials flocking to urban settings, which often means less vital quarters, or boomers downsizing to less vital homes.
