The compressor will run, pump cool air into the freezer, but not the refrigerator part. The thing that concerns me is that the right side (facing the front) of the unit heats up now, and actually gets hot. Is this unit shot? What causes the heat?

If you’re lucky, it got badly “frosted” – beyond the capability of the defrost heater to clear it up in a single cycle. You might try letting it defrost manually for a day or so.

It may have burned out it’s motor trying to cool the open fridge. Probably best to get it checked out unless it’s very old, if so, replace it.

turn it off for at least 24 hrs and try it again

Agree with the other guys here, try to turn it off, let it thaw out… it’s probably covered in ice… Also, basic maintenance if you can pull it out check for excessive dirt build up….. Dust can act as 1.) an insulator and make everything heat up and 2.) prevent the heat picked up inside your refrigerator from being released back into the air outside.

When you turn your fridge back on , don’t have the dial set to “max cold” have it set low and gradually increase the temperature over an hour or so time.

Also, keep in mind if you have an empty refrigerator all your doing is removing the heat from the air inside it, so as soon as you open your door the outside air goes in the cold air comes out….. so it might not seem like it’s doing anything. Refrigerators actually work better when they have things inside
